R&D Software Engineer

May 2019 • Austin, TX

What I liked

My experience at Keysight Technologies has been fantastic. I will start with the prompt, responsive and friendly recruiting process. I first received an e-mail from Maria about the application I submitted online. She was very prompt, clear and friendly throughout the whole process. I never felt rushed to submit documents right away and/or pressured to schedule a phone interview at a time that does not work for me. She was very understanding about my situation and about what I was looking for in an internship. I am so glad I had the opportunity to work with her. She was very supportive and provided me with great advice to ace my phone interviews. After about three weeks, I received a call from Maria with an internship offer. My internship experience has been awesome. I have been learning so much about network visibility products, specially how to test network packet brokers, manually and automatically. Having no industry experience in the software development and QA industry, I know that after completing this internship, I will be more confident in my software engineering skills. I cannot thank Keysight and Maria enough for this fantastic opportunity. I highly recommend all students to apply for an internship at Keysight. I can tell you with confidence that you will learn very valuable and practical skills that will help you in your software engineer career.

What I wish was different

More activities for interns, specially those not at the main headquarters.

Advice

Apply, apply, apply! Even if you think, you do not meet all criteria, apply!

The friendliness and experience of coworkers are excellent. The atmosphere is laid back, but productive.

What I wish was different

The onboarding process was somewhat underdeveloped, but ambitious and assertive applicants will have no trouble.

Advice

Find a company where you feel comfortable and can learn without feeling inadequate. Otherwise you will hate working there and discourage your own professional development.

Software Engineer

June - September 2017 • Santa Rosa, CA

What I liked

The company environment was always very inviting, and it was very easy to become integrated into the team.

What I wish was different

I do wish the material was a bit more relevant, by the nature of the company the material is a bit old fashioned.

Advice

I would say that you should do your best to get involved with other extracurricular aspects at the company.

Data Scientist

June - September 2017 • Santa Rosa, CA

What I liked

I was given an fun and engaging problem to figure out almost everyday that forced me to use every bit of my resources and knowledge to solve. The main overall project involved developing an algorithm that dynamically modeled forecasts in sales in the upcoming months. The people were very professional, yet friendly. And everyone was brilliant at answering questions using diagrams and examples.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been tasked with using more high level machine learning algorithms. The model I used to forecast was called ARIMA which was very useful to learn, but I would have liked to have had the chance to explore other deep learning models.

Advice

There is no such thing as an unsuccessful network. Talk to as many people as you can while you're there, pick their brains and see if you can learn more from them about what they do.
