Research Experience for Undergraduates

June - August 2019 • Lamar University, TX

What I liked

It was an amazing research experience. My faculty advisor for my assigned project worked with our team and didn’t just supervise.

What I wish was different

It needed to be organized before students arrived on campus. Housing and getting our meal plan was more complicated than it needed to be

Advice

Apply to a Research Experience for Undergraduates! I learned so much in the span of three months, and I definitely plan to apply to different ones this summer!

I loved helping students with their writing. It was enlightening to work through the writing process in a variety of assigned forms, such as essays (informative, argumentative, descriptive, narrative, etc.) and other writing assignments. It was nice to explore so many ideas, and it was fulfilling to help and guide students toward completing meaningful projects.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more training/workshops that address how student workers (and future educators) like myself can better work with students with learning disabilities.

Advice

Students react to criticism differently, and it’s meaningful to approach different students in different ways with different teaching techniques, so they can learn and grow in a more effective way.

Undergraduate Researcher

February 2018 • Beaumont, TX

What I liked

My mentors, and research team. the advice and companionship between all of us helped me to choose my major(since I changed majors), and also narrow down my career choice for after college. I didn't think I was good enough to make it through my bachelor's, but now with their support I'm considering graduate school, Master's and PhD, and will start applying next semester/ year.

What I wish was different

I wish their was more funding for undergraduate research and more resources on campus, like lab equipment etc.

Advice

For people who suffer with learning disabilities, undergraduate research and more specifically collaborative work, help not only with your academics, but also to understand the practical sense of the work associated with real world situations. This connection allows you to become more self-confident in yourself, and also more confident in working with a team. It allows you to understand that there will be failures before success. With every failure comes a great success, and we live in a generation that doesn't understand that it is okay to fail. If there was more collaborative studies instead of competitive studies, every person would succeed because each person can use the way they learn, and the way they think to solve more problems and effectively help in team situations. Not only do you get a new perspective on solving problems, you also are able to help and understand others.
