Intern

June - August 2018 • Charlottesville, VA

What I liked

I loved getting to speak to clients and really getting to see the hard work that goes on behind the scenes before clients even get to speak to attorneys. It was a very eye-opening experience to hear the stories of injustice happening throughout Charlottesville and really drove my ambition to become a lawyer one day so that I could also stand up for these people.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more structure to the internship as a whole, and perhaps a chance to connect with attorneys as mentors. I realize that is a lot to ask, but it would have been a very cool experience.

Advice

Just be open to doing everything! Even if you're just copying and scanning papers for hours, know that the work you're doing is giving an attorney more time to speak to a client and to work towards getting them a favorable ruling or outcome. Every job you get to do in this internship means something to someone and allows the Legal Aid Justice Center to continue doing what they're doing!
