Meijer

IT Intern

May 2022 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

I loved the work culture that Meijer has fostered on their campus. It was very welcoming and everyone was friendly. The project I was given was challenging and required me to learn new technologies and ask a lot of questions. I value this greatly as it helped improve my skills all across the board!

What I wish was different

Nothing. It was an excellent experience.

Advice

It's ok if you don't feel confident in your skills or get imposter syndrome. No one wants you to fail, just keep your head up, ask lots of questions, and be willing to learn!

March 2020 • Kent, OH

What I wish was different

I wish the turnover rate was not as big for courtesy clerks. It was hard keeping people out there.

Merchandising Intern

May - August 2020 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

The company was very open, meaning interns could talk to whoever in the company they wanted to reach out to. I worked with two Buyers as my mentors, but was able to talk to everyone from health and beauty, product development, home, pets, you name it. The GVP's and even the CEO talked with us.

What I wish was different

I wish we had been in person, though understand that with the pandemic this was not possible. It was harder to currate relationships over zoom. In addition, the overall intern project needed to be a bit more detailed, but the lack of detail gave us creative freedom, and it turned out well.

Advice

Talk with everyone you can during an internship. Even if your role may not be exactly where you see yourself, talk to others and learn about all of the positions you can.

What I wish was different

The whole thing was virtual, out of their control but it would've been nice to see the office in person.

Connect with everyone! Even if you don't need them for your project/work, it's cool to hear about what people do in the company and be able to rely on them for help after the internship.
