Mori Associates

Communications Strategist

June - November 2018 • Rockville, MD

What I liked

I enjoyed this position because it was remote. All the company is based in Maryland, I was able to do all my work for the company via my own personal laptop and while spending the summer in Chicago. I have a lot of personal freedom and the position and was able to show my leadership skills early on.

What I wish was different

As I’ve held a similar internship position before in aerospace, I was hired and communications for this company. However, I was the only corporate Communications Strategist, thus I didn’t have anyone to truly learn from in my roll. The Chief Innovation Officer of the company was my mentor, which provided me with general academic in post-graduation help, however I wish I had another mentor and the communications field.

Advice

I will tell other students to not be afraid to network or speak to people out in the public. In most positions, a connection to the company is what either gets your resume looked at or gets you the job in today’s competitive market. I was at a Citizens for Space Exploration event on Capitol Hill, which is a student-based program, when I was networking/speaking to the industry leaders in the program. I was not expecting to gain an internship from this event, but had I not networked with these professionals, I wouldn’t have known about the position with this NASA contractor. Never be afraid to mingle.
