Morris Museum

Marketing Intern

June - August 2019 • Morristown, NJ

What I liked

I wanted to get exposure into the marketing world and felt like a good first step was to do it in an art-world environment that would be related to my minor. The Museum is a smaller, not-for-profit organization that does things on a smaller scale compared to a big for-profit corporation. I wanted to learn the basics of marketing and have my first experience be in a more intimate setting. I enjoyed taking photographs and film and seeing the positive feedback online when I posted things that were my own ideas. I also liked the excitement of working the big events and receptions.

What I wish was different

If I could have added something I would have wanted to work with more people and collaborate more across the departments in the museum. I did get to work with a nice variety of different positions outside the marketing team, such as the curatorial team and a few clients.

Advice

I learned about the importance of prioritizing and efficiently allocating my time. The advice I would give is to make a schedule with the times at which you want to get things done to stay on task and plan ahead for up-coming work.

Collections Intern

June - August 2018 • Morristown, NJ

What I liked

I got hands-on experience with a variety of different fields in the museum industry--collections, curatorial, conservation, and education. It was a great opportunity for me to get a taste of each department within the Guinness Collection, which was the specific collection I worked for.

What I wish was different

I did not expect the amount of research and desk work I had to do.

Advice

Definitely not for everyone--must be very interested in the field and dedicated to museum work, or else you would be very bored.
