Navajo Technical University

Extension intern

May - August 2019 • Crownpoint, NM

What I liked

During my internship I was able to gain hands on experience vaccinating over 300 sheep and goats, learning about the Navajo culture, gaining connections, as well as help count and incubate cultures in the lab.

What I wish was different

There is a two week youth program where the interns assist in chaperoning and watching over the youth. It is a good experience, but the organization of it could’ve been a bit cleaner. They are still working out the kinks.

Advice

Bring sunscreen, remember to get ample sleep (especially because the job will have a lot of physical aspects). Remember to grow and respect the tribes culture. Also, be sure to bring a good, off-road car to be able to explore all the sights! And the most important part, bring cash!!!! Most of the vendors at the markets/parks/rodeos etc., if not all, only accept cash.
