New Era Colorado

Intern

June - August 2018 • Denver, CO

What I liked

- Incredibly friendly, supportive & collaborative work environment - Field-based experience (i.e. voter registration at local festivals, "hot-spot" cafes, bars etc.) - Opportunities to learn from staff members & volunteers about their professional experiences in one-on-one conversations in the field & in more formal settings. - Leadership opportunities with volunteers & other interns - Exposure to grassroots organizing and the political process (data entry, phone banking, interacting with local community members, learning effective language to reach out to people) - New Era's mission to engage young people in democracy is one that I'm passionate about - Educational component of the internship in weekly classroom sessions (i.e. What's on the CO ballot? How local & federal politics work, Digital Organizing etc.) -Local engagement in my community

What I wish was different

- Some of the tasks were repetitive (primarily field-based voter registration) - Varying levels of commitment/interest by other interns - I would have liked more formal opportunities to learn from ALL the different parts of the organization.
