Northwoods Wildlife Center

Rehabilitation and Education Intern

May - August 2021 • Minocqua, WI

What I liked

This internship provided me with a wide variety of hands-on experiences in a welcoming work environment! You truly get to assist with every aspect of the rehabilitation process. Throughout the internship, you learn animal care protocols, handling skills, and basic medical procedures for a wide variety of species. On a weekly or bi-weekly basis, you also get the opportunity to lead educational tours of the wildlife center. If desired, the staff is happy to help you take on additional projects to fit your interests, such as socializing and handling ambassador animals. The wildlife center is located in a beautiful small town surrounded by lakes, which becomes a big tourist area over the summer. Plus, housing and a small stipend are provided and you get two days off each week-- something hard to come by in this field!

Advice

Don't be afraid to speak up! If you want to learn how to do something specific, ask the staff and remind them to train you. If you have any feedback on how to improve the program, bring it to your intern supervisor. They listen and really value intern opinions!
