NYS Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES)

Office of Emergency Management Intern

May - August 2018 • Albany, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed working with the people a lot. I learned a lot through conversations and bits of advice they all really wamted to offer me. The work was easy and gave me a taste of what maybe an analyst or a lower leveled state employee would be doing, but I also simultaneously observed others and got to see what their jobs were like. Sometimes even help with a project or just be additional support. I loved working there and I would not mind working there in the future in the least.

What I wish was different

I wish there was a better way to work for the state. Waiting for amd taking civil service tests can be frustrating, and so far there has not been an exam I've eanted to take that could possibly relate to an OEM career.

Advice

Try everything, make small talk with all the people, and just be a sponge. DHSES helps emerse those interested in Homeland Security or Emergency Management into the workforce and get a chance to learn. Its similar to taking 4 semesters of Spanish and then going abroad. Learning the language and how it operates can only truly be learned by becoming a part of it, and this is an amazing opportunity for that.
