Refugees International

Communications Intern

November 2020 • Washington, DC

What I liked

The Communications team at RI is close knit and professional! They taught me a lot about how to conduct myself in a personable and workplace-appropriate manner while working online. They gave me many hours of valuable, interactive online trainings and put a lot of effort into making the internship experience worthwhile for me.

Advice

The best part of RI is the workplace community. Take advantage of the amazing staff and advocates! Many are willing to meet one on one for chats even if you are not working in their department. Also, I found that taking initiative and asking to work on projects/topics that are of particular interest to you. People at RI are very supportive of interns using their time at RI to develop their portfolios for future career goals.

What I liked

It was amazing to be able to interact with refugees from all over the world. I loved learning about their culture as well as sharing a part of mine by teaching them English.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to do something like this! It might seem expensive or too far or too scary. But it is worth it and it is possible .
