Research Assistant

May - August 2020 • North Providence, RI

What I liked

I was given the chance to work independently towards a general goal. My main tasks were to make a workshop for high school teachers to explain data science and data visualization, and to create a workbook of activities for them to use in the classroom. It was printed and mailed out, so now I'm kind of like a published author!

What I wish was different

I wish it had been in person, but that wasn't able to happen due to the pandemic. The workshop might have been easier had we been there to walk teachers through some of the software we found was available.

Advice

Reach out to your professors for positions within the department you're majoring in! There could be some very fun jobs waiting that get lost in advertising.

What I liked

I really like how working at admissions has connected me to other resources and people on campus. I also like how all of the tour guides really bond together and become a family.

What I wish was different

There are some logistical issues that need to be worked out so that we can be more organized.

Advice

It can be nerve racking having to talk in front of people, but don't be nervous! It's a great experience and a great way to build on your public-speaking skills.

Student Worker

July 2019 • Providence, RI

What I liked

I like the work that I do in the Records Office. I learned a lot about the school and what goes on behind the scenes in the administrative end. The job is also flexible around my class schedule so I am able to work and not have to worry about it interfering with school.

What I wish was different

I wish there was an easier way for me to help students rather than always having to ask a full-time employee.

Advice

Go in with an open mind, and always be ready to do the work needed.

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellow

May - July 2019 • North Providence, RI

What I liked

A really good hands-on experience with STEM research, doing work that had clear cut outcomes and expectations. Learned a lot about experimental design and data analysis, as well as had the opportunity for professional development via different program-organized workshops. Practiced fundamentals of science communication by presenting research at the SURF conference by the end of the 10 weeks.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more opportunities for professional development and networking with the other SURF fellows. I enjoyed the company of my labmates, but I wanted to hear and keep up with the other research being done beyond just the final conference at the end of the 10 weeks. I also wish the career exploration portion delved deeper into non-academia jobs related to STEM fields.

Advice

Really apply yourself to the research! Even if it isn't directly applicable to what you want to study in the future, it's undeniably amazing and important experience and it imparts critical skills that will always come in handy down the line. Also, deeply consider who you want to be your mentor. This person can offer important advice and guide you beyond the summer, so keep in mind what the PI can teach you in addition to the research you want to conduct.
