About RIT - College of Science

Welcome to the College of Science at the Rochester Institute of Technology. The College of Science has 937 undergraduate students, 503 graduate students and 197 faculty members. It delivers scientific and mathematical education for most of the programs offered at RIT. The College of Science houses four of RIT’s eight Ph.D. programs – astrophysical sciences and technology, color science, imaging science, and mathematical modeling.

The College of Science offers undergraduate and graduate programs in the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science, Thomas H. Gosnell School of Life Sciences, the School of Chemistry and Materials Science, the School of Mathematical Sciences, the School of Physics and Astronomy, and the Program of Color Science. It also offers many research opportunities and programs and houses a number of research centers and laboratories that are conducting world-renowned research.

The Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science offers the only imaging science Ph.D. program in the country. Experts in remote sensing, image processing, document restoration, visual perception and medical imaging work with students at all levels on projects that combine optics, photonics, mathematics, computer science, and computer and electrical engineering. Likewise, RIT is one of the only places in the world that offers a Ph.D. in color science, which combines imaging, chemistry and materials science.

Leading astrophysicists mentor graduate students in the astrophysical sciences and technology Ph.D. program with a focus on supermassive black holes and galaxy evolution in the Center for Computational Relativity and Gravitation; planetary nebulae and massive star clusters in the Laboratory for Multiwavelength Astrophysics; and sensor technology for ground- and space-based telescopes in the Center for Detectors.

In addition to its degree programs, the College delivers the required scientific and mathematical underpinnings for most of the programs offered at RIT.
