What I liked

Working in Colorado was an amazing experience, I cannot recommend this experience enough! I was able to work outdoors in a very rewarding setting, and also gained useful experience for my future.

What I wish was different

I honestly just wish I could experience it all again. I will definitely be applying again.

Advice

APPLY! For a student interested in biological research, this place is heaven. Also, be prepared to be outside. The station is at a serious altitude, so be prepared to be uncomfortable, but it is so worth it.

Biology Intern

June - August 2019 • Crested Butte, CO

What I liked

Working one on one with a mentor. The education panels held every week. The science talks every tuesday nights. The amazing environment and beautiful scenery of the Rocky Mountains

What I wish was different

Nothing it was perfect. You have to get used to using an outhouse though, but I enjoyed the rugged lifestyle.

Advice

Network with as many grad students and mentors as much as you can. Making friends with the interns makes it easier to pass time, but try to be friend with the grad students more if you're serious about your field.

What I liked

My mentor Dr. Rick Williams, the curator of the RMBL herbarium taught me so much about alpine flora. The grad panels were helpful to learn about grad school. The community of scientists were so nice, open and knowledgeable about their fields.

Student Researcher

June - August 2018 • Crested Butte, CO

What I liked

I thoroughly enjoyed working in the field and collaborating with so many different labs. People were engaged in their work and willing to lend a hand to others for their research. All resources were open to undergraduates, so it felt like we were just as applicable to the overall lab as even the most seasoned researchers.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more software training like was stated in the orientation. There were a few seminars on how to use R, but they were not very helpful.

Advice

Make the most our of a summer of research at RMBL. Time goes by very fast and getting an entire research project done in the 10 weeks you are there is very challenging. Try to have an idea of what you want to do before you get there to save time.
