As a transporter, I am able to see all the different departments of the hospital. I love being able to observe how they function and their interactions. My most favorite aspect of the job is communicating with everyone, whether it be patients, their families and relatives, or fellow hospital staff. I am able to gain insight into all the varying positions and my potential future careers.
What I wish was different
I do not wish anything would be different within Transport.
Advice
I would advise to have strong communication skills and an optimistic perspective.

Student Nurse Extern
May - August 2019 • Charleston, SC
What I liked
Great experience, gaining both knowledge and hands on experience. Coworkers/healthcare system was great.
What I wish was different
The opportunity to move around to different areas within the hospital instead of working in the same area the entire time of externship.
Advice
Definitely would recommend future nursing students to apply to this or any externship. It helps you get more comfortable with patient care and get used to how a 12 hour shift goes. Also, get to experience how the communication between care team members occurs/roles of each.

What I liked
This was a wonderful hospital to volunteer at!
What I wish was different
I wish I did not have to wear a collared shirt.
Advice
Plan ahead and know that between applying, volunteer orientation, TB tests, etc. there's about a month between when you initially apply and when you actually get to start volunteering!
