SABIC

Technology Intern

May - August 2024 • Mount Vernon, IN

What I liked

All the employees were so nice and helpful. Everyone was willing to answer questions or help you if you get lost. The plant site is huge, so it is easy to get lost. The projects they gave the interns were very interesting and required innovation skills. At the end of the internship, you write up a report for every project you did that will be published internally. It is a great resume booster. There is also a poster session where many scientists and engineers come to see what you worked on all summer.

What I wish was different

I wish the mentors were there to help more. I felt like the mentors expected us to dive right into a project without the lab environment. I spent a lot of time looking for glassware and chemicals that I wish my mentor told me where they were the first week.

Advice

I came to this internship not knowing anyone and never having been to Indiana, but I left with a lot of connections with chief scientists and engineers and learned a lot from them. I was scared coming here, but it was the best decision I could have made. So, even if it is out of your comfort zone, it may be the most beneficial experience for you, and you should go for it!

What I wish was different

Asset Reliability Intern

May - August 2022 • Selkirk, NY

What I liked

Self driven projects and a super supportive team helping out. The safety culture on site was also spectacular: everyone was watching out for one another and it really helped turn an intimidating chemical plant into a manageable place of work.

What I wish was different

Wished I could have worked with other interns more often. There were other interns on site, but I rarely had overlapping projects across the different departments that we could work together on.

Advice

Ask questions and grow your network throughout the site. Plenty of knowledge to go around you just have to ask around and find it.

Chemical Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Ottawa, IL

What I liked

Really good interactive experience. People in charge of program really designed it well and change according to feedback.

What I wish was different

Wish my roles (this was a repeat internship) was switched in order, but had a good time so not sure if I wanted anything to be different.

Advice

Not be afraid to try. It isn't a glamorous position and a lot of people who are more research oriented are against trying but the experience is great for any research position.
