Saint Louis University

University 101 Peer Instructor

August - November 2020 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

I loved being able to connect with and be a resource to the freshman at SLU. It was such a great experience to help them transition from high school to college life, especially in the midst of this hectic pandemic.

What I wish was different

It would have been nice if we had been able to do more interactive activities. It was challenging to cultivate full participation and engagement with COVID restrictions.

Advice

I would recommend maintaining constant communication with your primary instructor about the class, how the students are doing, and how you both could find ways to better the experience of the students.

ITS Intern

August - December 2016 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

Being assigned challenging projects that impacted production-level tasks while being given free reign to tackle them as I saw fit.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been a more structured program that allowed interns to rotate through the different IT departments.

Advice

Persevere. It took me two emails and a face-to-face interaction with the internship coordinator before I finally was able to schedule an interview with my supervisor in the Wool building. Utilize the career resource center. They can help you polish your resume and conduct mock interviews to help you prepare.

Lab Assistant

May 2016 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

I appreciated the opportunity for continued growth as a researcher. I'm planning on applying to graduate school and a large part of obtaining a higher degree is research. My lab PI sees me as a real and capable person with interests. She kept these interests in mind throughout the summer, encouraging to perform investigations that she thought I'd find to be engaging. I got to do technical research lab tasks like specimen dissection, which was probably my favorite part of it all.

What I wish was different

I had the awesome opportunity to visit the Tyson Research Center and work with the wonderful individuals over there. I wish I had gone more!

Advice

I landed this position after developing a relationship with one of my beloved professors who eventually introduced me to my current lab PI. Forming intentional connections with your professors and learning about their research is important.
