I liked the flexibility of the office personnel and the opportunity to focus on my personal interests.

Information Research Science Intern
June 2019 • Salem, MA
What I liked
I liked how Salem State gave me the opportunity to intern and help with research the SMS department is still currently researching. Learning from my professors gave me great insight to what I wanted to study post grad.
What I wish was different
If I could change anything I would have wanted to switch locations. It would have been nice to be in different research labs to see how they operate as opposed to just how Salem state operates.
Advice
My one piece of advice is to do an internship you're actually interested in. If you're just doing the first one you can find so you can fulfill the class credit then you're going to miss out on very important opportunities that can help advance you in the career you want in the end.

O’Team Member
August - September 2019 • Salem, MA
What I liked
I liked to help the freshmen to move in and be part of their first SSU experience. Also helping to sort and bring food to a shelter.
What I wish was different
I wish I was able to volunteer helping people or something that had more need than the House of Seven Gables.
Advice
I was the only “leader” as the O’Team member and made me feel really pressured, because it had to be a role model for the freshmen and tried to carry a lot of stuff by myself. Sometimes you can rely on the people that are seeing you as a role model, just because you are the leader doesn’t mean that you don’t need help.

Orientation Leader
June - August 2019 • Salem, MA
What I liked
One of the things that I really love about this job is the connections that you make with people. It’s really crazy to think how a staff of 20 people can all become best friends, but it’s so true. And on top of that, helping students transition into the Salem State Community is absolutely rewarding and amazing.
What I wish was different
One thing that I wish had been different was the schedule. Orientation requires you to be going from 8am-10pm on Day 1 and 7am-6pm on Day 2, plus transfer orientations that go from 7am-5pm. And these schedules happen 4-5 days in a row at a time. So the schedule is a lot.
Advice
Do not get frustrated when things get hard. You’re gonna have students and parents that are going to be mean to you. Just keep your head up and rely on your support systems within the role, Pro Staff, the NODA Grad Intern, and the rest of your staff.

Front Desk Receptionist
May - September 2019 • Salem, MA
What I liked
Being able to live on campus over summer at discounted rate
Being able to work with a great group of people
I met a lot of people that I now call friends
The job itself was something I really enjoyed because it brought me out of my comfort zone and help me socially
What I wish was different
The hours of the job were long and sometimes overnight so I wish they were divided differently
Perhaps training should have been a more hands on experience since I felt many people had questions left unanswered when we began working
Advice
I highly suggest that anyone taking a job over the summer to only work one job
if you’re taking classes be sure to factor in study/homework hours when providing your availability so you don’t risk your class grade

Graduate Assistant
May 2019 • Salem, MA
What I liked
I loved working with potential students and hearing their different experiences. I worked in Graduate Admissions so I saw people of all ages, ethnicity, and backgrounds coming in to try and further their education. It was an amazing chance to work with so many different kinds of students and try to help them find out what would be best foe them. I also spent a lot of time doing the behind the scenes work which was fun to experience and gain skills at.
What I wish was different
I would not change much except maybe getting the chance to work more 1 on 1 with students.
Advice
Don't be afraid to ask questions because there are a lot of moving parts and it is best to ask and know for sure than guess.

SharePoint Manager
July 2018 • Salem, MA
What I liked
The fact that this internship gave me the leeway to learn a new skill and fostered my love for IT was awesome. This internship gave me the ability to work completely from home, which for me is two hours away! It has always been a pleasant experience working with those in the School of Education.
What I wish was different
If I could go back and do it over again, I am not sure I would change a thing. The experience was unlike anything I had ever done before which made it challenging, rewarding, and most importantly, enjoyable.
Advice
My advice when working a summer internship is to always stay positive and never doubt your skills. Your employer wouldn't have hired you if they were not confident that you could do the job! If you are struggling on a certain task, don't be afraid to talk to a team member or your manager. They can help you to improve at what you are struggling with.
