What I liked
I really liked being able to connect with students on a personal experience throughout the summer. Even though my job was virtual, I was able to help get new students and families acclimated to SDSU!
What I wish was different
I didn't like having to be virtual and the hours were long being on a computer. However, next year we will be in person and that will no longer be an issue hopefully!
Advice
Enjoy the conversations with students and try to remember their names and faces! (you will be seeing them again on campus)

Field Research Assistant
May - August 2021 • San Diego, CA
What I liked
I really liked being able to do work and collect data in a more hands-on fashion. I had done research before, but most of the work that I was doing was remote and through online databases. Being able to go out into the field and actually be at the site that we were studying was really fun and made it easier to connect with the project that I was working on.
What I wish was different
In terms of the actual experience, I do not wish that anything would have been different. I enjoyed everything about doing field research and my only wish was that I had more time over the summer to do so. I was in this position on top of working two other jobs, so there were some times when I couldn't fully dedicate myself to the project (which is why I decided to work as a volunteer research assistant instead of taking on another official position.
Advice
From this experience and in general I think that being able to try new things and put
relevant issues into perspective is super important when it comes to discovering what you are interested in (or not interested in!). Even if you aren't sure about whether you really want to do something, at least try it once, because you never know where that experience will lead you.

Student Research Assistant
July 2020 • San Diego, CA
What I liked
I learned a lot more about the research process as it relates to economics.
What I wish was different
In person
Advice
Don't be afraid to be creative (maybe counterintuitive to economic quantitative analysis, but hear me out). There have been a lot of different issues I have been confused by through my work, but I have been most successful when I just try a lot of different things and see what works! MAJOR caveat- ALWAYSSS save copies of your work, don't want to realize that your method did not work only to find you have lost your previous data.
