I wish I had been able to find a position that was more related to my academic interests and that was less administrative.

Student Design Trainee
June - September 2018 • San Francisco, CA
What I liked
I loved how willing the engineers were to teach me new things. I knew nothing about what they were doing going in, but at the end of the internship I could explain what electrical engineers at the SFPUC do and how it relates to the bigger picture in providing water, power, and sewer services to San Francisco and the Bay Area. Specifically, I liked how when I was given submittals to look over, they would go over it again with me afterward and explain what I did well, what I did poorly, why it mattered, and how I could do better next time.
What I wish was different
I wish I could have been given submittals earlier, as I learned the most from doing actual work like reviewing those. I also wish that I could have had the chance to work on a design project, but next time I intern I know what to ask for.
Advice
Be open to learning, but keep in mind that the career involves a lot of learning as well, so the engineers are learning as well.
