The New England Center for Children

Intern

August - November 2020 • Southborough, MA

What I liked

Interns at this site are given the same training as all other employees and have many of the same responsibilities and expectations, while receiving constant support and mentorship. This allows the intern to maximize their professional growth and skill acquisition during their time and thoroughly prepares them for a career after the internship.

part time summer intern

June - August 2018 • Southborough, MA

What I liked

Even as an intern, you were treated just like the full-time paid teachers at the school. You were able to be hands-on working with the kids, rather than just shadowing teachers and watching them do the work.

What I wish was different

All internships with NECC are unpaid, so I would have liked to receive some kind of pay or stipend for the summer so I could have spent more time working at the school rather than working a side job to generate some kind of money to use for the summer.

Advice

Each day can be challenging because you are working with children with severe disabilities, but if you stick with it it will be an extremely rewarding experience.

Summer Intern - Level 2 Teacher

June - August 2017 • Southborough, MA

What I liked

Collaborative work environment, high-quality facility, hands-on experience, full integration as a team member (I was never just "the intern"), flexibility with hours (part-time vs full-time, which days of the week)

What I wish was different

I wish I had experienced a larger array of tasks that the students engaged in

Advice

If you're interested in observing/taking part in anything that the school has to offer, ASK ABOUT IT. The internship coordinator was great about allowing the interns to explore their interests.
