Barista

August 2019 - October 2020 • Tecumseh, MI

What I liked

Tim Hortons is a fast-paced work environment and requires you to think on your feet and work in sync with your team members. I enjoyed the challenge of working in the mornings provided and there is a satisfaction I get from greeting the customers and getting to know the regulars.

What I wish was different

I wish management was more strict. It's not often that you may hear someone say that about a job but having the management be impartial with their employees is relieving. I wouldn't have to wonder if everyone has the same work expectations and I think there would have been fewer miscommunications between the management and staff.

Advice

There are a lot of small details and drinks to memorize on the job but your coworkers are a valuable resource. Ask questions and get to know them also keep trying to take on new tasks. Even if you are unsure, going out of your comfort zone will help you learn the menu quicker and give you the confidence to expand past your original station.

What I wish was different

Wish the workload had been more fairly shared and that the pay was higher for the amount of work you have to do.

Advice

Do not go into the job expecting it to be boring or being able to slack off. It’s never boring and there’s always work to do.

What I liked

My fellow crew members were very personable and they were all awesome. The culture at that store was very welcoming and fun.

What I wish was different

Honestly, I wish I could have worked more. My goal this summer was to save up as much as possible, and I wanted to work as much as possible.

Advice

I met so many new people and I ended up getting an edge in Spanish and speaking because many of my coworkers spoke fluent Spanish. I could learn from them while I was working, and it was so rewarding. I recommend getting out of your comfort zone, sometimes it really pays off!
