I interned with Elevated Eats as they started their nonprofit cafeteria located at the school district offices. I liked being able to put all of my class learning into application from the ground up. I helped create a menu, price it out, ran projections, survey guests, train staff, and help to organize the grand opening etc. I appreciated that I got to make my own schedule, set up fieldtrips for myself, and interact with a variety of departments at the school district.
What I wish was different
I wish I would have had more of a hospitality mentor to work with. Someone I could have discussed the projections with. Because this was a startup project we had little research to pull from before the grand opening and things often felt unorganized. The person I reported to was gone for most of my internship so I felt on my own most of the time.
Advice
Learn how to network from Casey, he is awesome at networking. Rely on Karen for written communications and learning the ropes of establishing an online presence. Enjoy the women in the office, they are wonderful.

What I liked
I liked that the career fair ended up being the source of my employment. Trust the process! Work hard and while you’re waiting to hear back, keep moving forward.
What I wish was different
I wish the process had been a bit faster. I first spoken to someone about this position at a career fair on campus in March. From there, I applied in late June/early July and didn’t hear back from my employer until end of July. I started work mid August.
Advice
Just keep applying!! I didn’t hear back from a ton of people and the ones I did hear back from I learned from. I learned more about the requirements needed to become an SLT and why I wasn’t having more luck. It just takes one “yes” to get your start.
