What I liked

The Tory Burch internship provided a phenomenal learning experience. The weekly speaker series helped all of the interns learn from other departments, and everything was very inclusive. Sitting in on presentations with Tory was the coolest part!

What I wish was different

I wish there was a capstone project.

Ask questions! Learn as much as possible.

The flexibility, how helpful and kind all of the employees were, the Tory Burch Internship program in general which offered field trips and lectures from all departments, Friday summer hours

I wish I would have been reimbursed for my PATH and metro tickets

International Merchandising Intern

What I liked

I got to work in a fast paced, corporate setting and learned a ton about the fashion industry. I got the opportunity to sit in on meetings, watch merchandisers come in and evaluate show rooms, and gained valuable insight into not only my department, but 5-10 others.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been busier, since there were so many interns there were some lulls.

Advice

I think getting out of my community and pushing myself to try something scarier was of enormous value to me!

Real Estate Intern

What I liked

This experience was unparalleled, and I felt so lucky to be a part of it. Throughout the 10-week program, I learned about all the aspects of a successful retail company. We had weekly speakers from design, marketing, wholesale, real estate, merchandising teams and many more. I worked with the financial and legal departments on various projects such as NYC market strategy, co-tenancy gap analysis, and competitive analysis on other large luxury players in the market. I enjoyed sitting in on some copy/creative meetings as well, to learn about Tory Burch from that perspective of the company.

What I wish was different

I loved every aspect of this position, and hope to continue on with this company upon graduation.

Advice

The experience is what you make it. I took it upon myself to schedule 15+ personal meetings with people in the company I had not met yet. I wanted to learn about all aspects of the company while networking and learning. I definitely would recommend doing this!

What I liked

Real life application of what I have learnt in school and understanding them better. Also the fact that I had to go back to some of my school content to refresh my memory on some of the topics I was dealing with at work.

Explored more of the teams that I had access to so as to gain more experience in different areas of data analytics

When given an opportunity, take advantage of it and expose yourself to more than what is offered to you.

Wholesale Intern

What I liked

While my overall employer was Tory Burch, I worked with her sport line, Tory Sport, which is only about four years old. Tory started Tory Sport basically from scratch a few years ago, so it is kind of a start up within the company. I got the experience of both what it is like to work for a small startup and a large company. Also, even though I was working in wholesale, the company is very welcoming and happy to meet with interns. I was able to meet with higher up people from the Tory Burch Foundation and the styling team, and I even spent numerous days on set working as a styling assistant. They also had a weekly speaker series for the interns where different teams presented what they do, ie merchandising, production, design, buying, marketing, etc., so we had the opportunity to see all aspects of the company and what it would be like to work in all of the departments. Finally, the work that I did was always meaningful, whether it was something that had to get done or it was helping me learn, so there was never busy work.

What I wish was different

Quite honestly, there isn't much that I would change. I do wish that I had the opportunity to speak with someone who worked abroad at one of the Hong Kong or London offices because I would be interested in doing something like that. But I didn't have the right connections within the Manhattan office to find anyone to reach out to abroad. I'm still trying!

Advice

You will hear this over and over again, but take advantage of every free second that you have! Sometimes, there might not be a lot of work for you to do, so use that time to research the company and the industry that you're working in. If you have a lot of free time, ask your employer for a project to work on and put all of your effort into it.
