Information Technology Systems Student Worker

October 2018 - December 2019 • Lincoln, NE

What I liked

I loved the wide variety of skills I was able to learn and practice each day: ranging from technical skills like troubleshooting printer issues or remoting into a client's computer to fix an issue to learning effective communication skills within my Help Desk team and working in synergy as a team.

What I wish was different

I wish I applied for this job earlier and had a lengthier employment period with them because I'll be leaving them at the end of 2019 for graduation.

Advice

Coming into this job experience, I feared that my technical skills fell short. Seeing how technically competent my fellow senior coworkers were, I felt extra nervous. I've learned that nervousness and pressure are part and parcel of every new job. Fully embracing these emotions and letting them fuel you to rapidly improve and develop your skillsets can be very beneficial.

Student Worker

May - August 2019 • Lincoln, NE

What I liked

I enjoyed the environment I worked in. It was very positive and welcoming. Everyone I worked with had a positive attitude and was ready to take on any challenge. People went above and beyond to complete each task in a timely, effective manner.

What I wish was different

I wish we would have had a little more notice when things needed to be completed by a sooner deadline. There were times where we had to work harder the day of, to complete something by the end of the day we just started that same day.

Advice

Teamwork is important in any job you are at. You must be able to constructively work with individuals as a team and come to a consensus.

Conference Assistant

January 2018 • Ashland, OR

What I liked

I liked my coworkers and the people that I got to work with. Also, having a steady schedule and income was nice over the summer. Included in my stipend was a place to live and a meal plan, which was great.

What I wish was different

I wish I had gotten a few more opportunities to go home on weekends. I am really close with my family so it was hard to be away from them.

Advice

It was a lot of work, and Ashland is kind of unbearable in the summer. Find something (probably indoors) that you love so that you don't feel like you are suffocating. It is summer, after all!
