The ambience was truly unique. From being involved in the fast-pace and attending the committee meetings to attending events and getting to meet so many others from many other paths, it was a tremendous experience. Additionally, I genuinely could not have asked for a team of mentors than I was given, and I was fortunate enough to be embraced by those both in and out of the office.
What I wish was different
I wish it could have been longer, and that through UCF, somehow we could still be connected to the process as well.
Advice
Approach each day new and appreciate the moments and the small things so that you can learn the most and share positivity with others, as fortunately it went well for me. Also, don't be afraid to mess up, as it's understood by them due to you still being new to the process. Lastly, try to connect and go to the events as much as you can, as you'll miss them when you get back.

Legislative Intern
November 2020 - May 2021 • Tallahassee, FL
What I liked
Joining the Legislative Scholars Program was the best decision I made at UCF. As an intern, I had the privilege of working with and learning from some of the most influential people in the Florida Legislature and at my university. As soon as I was accepted into the program, my cohorts and I were taught everything we needed to know about how bills become laws, how the state legislature is structured, and how to represent ourselves (and UCF) well in Tallahassee. I wish everyone could experience this very unique opportunity!
What I wish was different
During any normal year, students in the program receive a stipend and an apartment to stay in while they work in Tallahassee. When I was an intern, the COVID-19 pandemic did not allow us to live in Tallahassee for the full length of time. Instead, we were allowed to go up for a week at a time during each month of legislative session. I wish I had more time in Tallahassee because there are so many people to meet, places to go, and opportunities to take advantage of.
Advice
This internship is what you make it. If you are granted the opportunity to be part of this program, don’t sit back and watch. Emerge yourself in the process and make the most of every second. Seek out opportunities to learn, opportunities to get to know others, and opportunities to be of service to others.
