Laboratory Assistant

March 2022 • Iowa City, IA

What I liked

I have really enjoyed the welcoming working environment at my lab and how eager everyone is to teach me about their projects and answer any questions I have. It has made me feel so supported as a student-employee, and having that feeling of comfort and safety with expanding my knowledge has been so conducive to my growth.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had a better understanding of what my expectations were upon entering work at a lab. I wanted to explore research as a means to learn more about it, so I was already aware upon entering this role that I did not entirely know what I wanted to gain from this experience. This is something that I am still working towards figuring out for myself, and I look forward to what will come of it.

Advice

Working at this lab, I learned something very critical about what to look for at any place of employment, and that is a positive and supportive working environment. I have never worked or learned in any other place that has been as wonderful as this setting, and the safety that I feel here is something so valuable that I will always appreciate and remember. I would advise anyone looking to work anywhere to find an environment that creates the right conditions for your growth. I interpret this as a working experience that includes the challenge and ambition that you are looking for, but that also includes a space of positivity and support to allow for those things to be achievable and sustainable.

STEM Education Student Administrative Assistant

October 2018 • Iowa City, IA

What I liked

I loved being able to have a mix of office work, leading K-12 STEM tours, and building my personal network.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have taken on more projects to set myself ahead for the Fall semester once our schedule started to get really busy. Summer is relatively open for our office, so we like to get a lot of projects done.

Advice

I was so hesitant to apply for this job before I did, but I was very interested in the position description and have a passion for STEM Education, so it only made sense to try. You never know what opportunities are going to be presented to you when you follow your passions and interests. Take the leap!
