Historian Research Assistant

August 2018 • Kenosha, WI

What I liked

I like the independence I'm allowed to have. I'm able to research on my own time at my own pace and most of the project is being designed by and created by me. It leaves a lot of responsibility on my shoulders, but I really value the opportunity to spearhead the project and shape it myself.

What I wish was different

Because of what I research (Foxconn), there can be political implications and repercussions, so there are times that I feel stymied by bureaucratic sorts of things that prevent me from publishing until after elections. However, this is often a reality of doing any sort of research anyway, so learning to navigate those sorts of things can be useful skills.

Advice

Sometimes, the best job connections you can find are through your personal network. I was able to get the grant from the Wisconsin Historical Society and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside thanks to the help of one of my professors.

Peer Mentor

July - August 2018 • Kenosha, WI

What I liked

I liked having the opportunity to help incoming college freshmen ease into college before the semester started. Being able to share my personal college experience and give tips was what I thought would be most helpful.

What I wish was different

I wish the program would have been longer, the experience was great and the time went by so fast.

Advice

If anyone has the opportunity to be a part of a leadership program, take it! It’s a great way to learn more about yourself and meet new people.
