HR Internship

September 2020 • Laramie, WY

What I liked

I loved the experience and knowledge that I have gained from my internship and I really liked that my employer was able to be open to me learning other areas of HR. I was hired to help with the benefits department but I was able to see other areas of HR such as payroll, compensation, and employee relations.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have expanded my network more with the companies we work with closely. (TIAA, WRS, Deer Oaks, ext.)

Advice

Grow your relationship with your employer and show that you are willing to expand your knowledge in many areas of your job. Being open minded was huge in my learning curve during my internship.

What I liked

Working with the students, coworkers were wonderful. Management works closely with the Orientation Leaders in order to meet their goals. Management was always appreciative of our work.

What I wish was different

Advice

Absolutely apply if you enjoy working with student, parents and other faculty. Especially if you have another job opportunity for the rest of the summer. Overall it has been one of my favorite jobs I have worked for.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

July - August 2018 • Laramie, WY

What I liked

I liked scheduling my own hours, and working at my own pace. I also liked the variety of skills required for my position, which included reviewing scientific articles (adapting the methods to my experiments), designing my own experiments, and finally conducting those experiments. Designing experiments made me feel creative and innovative, which was very exciting. Finally, I enjoyed sharing a lab with graduate student because they taught me a lot about new techniques and how to properly use equipment.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have done more background research about my topic so I could really understand all the in's and out's of my research. Understanding the basics is important, but becoming an expert on your research topic can come in handy, and it can inspire more questions for future experiments.

Advice

I would advise other research assistants to always ask questions! If you share a lab with other researchers, introduce yourself immediately and try to gain good rapport so you feel comfortable asking them questions. This will save you time and potential hardship down the road if you misuse equipment.
