What I liked

I LOVED being able to work behind the scenes of the university. Being privy to future building plans and getting to go into recently built/renovated spaces months before anyone else could was a remarkable and exclusive experience. I also enjoyed being hired to do something creative and take advantage of my skillsets. It was rewarding to be trusted with the design and layout of important documents used for professional use, all while representing the University of Oregon.

What I wish was different

I wish they had taken full advantage of what I could do. I thoroughly enjoyed the aforementioned parts, however I think they could have asked me to do more intense work, especially since they hired me for my graphic design skills. That said, it was refreshing and engaging to work in different areas than I expected, and I gained some good skills with programs I was previously unfamiliar with.

Advice

Pick a boss, not a job. I LOVED the architect who hired me, and in my early days, she made my day. She made the job far more interesting, entertaining, and humorous than I could have anticipated. Unfortunately, she went on maternity leave soon in and accepted a position elsewhere, forcing her to move altogether. Without her, my time was more mundane and honestly contributed to my decision to leave. I am fully aware I could not have done anything to account for her departure, but nonetheless it taught me a valuable lesson about what it means to have a solid employer to report to.
