Upward Bound

Tutor/Counselor

July - August 2018 • Brockport, NY

What I liked

I liked how much power I got to decide what activities the kids could do and how I got to help the students with their homework.

What I wish was different

I could’ve gone in with a more demanding attitude, the kids viewed me as a bit of a pushover in the first week, then I tried to change that.

Advice

Be firm on what your expectations are, but also just have fun with the experience, it’s a good one.

Tutor/Counselor

June - August 2019 • Frostburg, MD

What I liked

I love working with the kids at Upward Bound. My TC group was my own little family and I knew that all of the kids outside my group knew they could come to me if they had any issues.

What I wish was different

My bosses did not give me any support when we had a very problem child. They did everything in their power to keep that student in the program versus giving me support.

Advice

I want more minorities to apply for this position. There are alot of minority students in the program who are just looking for someone to look up to. I think that has been missing over the two years I have been with the program.

Teaching Assistant (Preschool, Elementary, Middle, and Secondary School)

June - August 2018 • Wellesley, MA

What I liked

I helped teach high school students different classes of English. I very much enjoyed watching my students grow and improve in their skills. I also enjoyed having a large degree of independence in the job, allowing me to improve and work on confidence and other personal skills.

What I wish was different

The dorm we stayed in lacked any kind of air conditioning. I did not expect the immense amount of heat that we got. The job was already exhausting enough, but the heat makes it even worse at times.

Advice

Some students made it abundantly clear they did not want to be there for summer school. Come to this job with plenty of patience to spare and a backbone. In addition, expect to work with some students 1-on-1 if they need any additional help.
