Academic Research Assistant

June 2018 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

It was a great learning experience as I was able to shadow surgical residents in the ER and OR. The doctors and coordinators that worked with the students were all very helpful and friendly.

What I wish was different

It was difficult to balance my summer job with time to shadow and meet the minimum research hours.

Advice

Spend as much time as possible shadowing. It is an amazing opportunity to be able to take notes and ask questions during surgery or patient interaction.

OT/ Orthopedics Volunteer

June - July 2018 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

I loved the staff and all the amazing opportunities I was allowed to take part in, such as joining the physicians for surgeries in the OR. Helping out in the OT while shadowing the physicians was something I never wanted to end and I wanted to stay as long as I could each day.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been there longer and had even more educational experiences!

Advice

County hospitals are great places to volunteer because the range of patients and care is so broad and helps pre-medical students grasp the healthcare system and truly experience what being a physician is about.

Student Research

June 2018 • Maricopa, AZ

What I liked

Students were able to not only help conduct a physicians research with the possibility of publication, but they also could shadow surgeons in the meantime to gain a better understanding of what field piqued their interest.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more guidance and instruction for the formation of a published paper should the need arise.

Advice

Even though it not required for you to be present at the hospital to conduct your research analysis, go. Interact with the other student researchers, make appointments with the physicians, and try to shadow as many surgeries as you can. For the appointments with the physician for whom you are doing research, be prepared with insightful questions and input. For the shadowing, write down some information about it afterward so you can reflect on it when writing about meaningful shadowing experience.
