Veris Insights

People and Business Operations Intern

June - August 2022 • Washington, DC

What I liked

Veris Insights has a wonderful company atmosphere that creates a great space for interns. My opinion was very clearly valued and I was very much included as an equal team member. As a result, this position was one that included lots of important learning on the job, which certainly advanced my abilities without specific instruction (though there were also chances for that as desired). The balance between a clearly structured program and one that allowed for lots of selection ensured that the internship was as interesting as it could be and I was able to grow in areas that I felt were essential for me.

What I wish was different

There was a significant emphasis on working with as many people as possible, and really getting to build a network. While this was great, I enjoyed getting to meet and work with a variety of people, it was often very difficult to coordinate schedules, which sometimes made this a difficult goal to achieve. This was really just the nature of the start-up, and it never hindered the work or learning experience, but having more concrete opportunities built into schedules would be helpful.

Advice

For any interns at Veris Insights, I would certainly say take advantage of every opportunity. I had a fabulous manager who encouraged me to get involved in as much as possible, chat with as many employees as I could, and really prioritize what I enjoyed doing and what would help me learn the most. Without this influence, I would not have had the same experience I did, and therefore my advice would be to advocate for yourself and never be afraid to ask for help or for the space to reevaluate your goals and how best to achieve them.

Strategy and Development Intern

September - December 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

Great team, very supportive. Lots of room for asking career advice from full time employees. Cool office space. Very flexible with hours, and they give you lots of autonomy.

What I wish was different

We cold called most of the day which could be boring. In addition, they set goals and then tied financial incentives to them, which I found unfair given that the only way to achieve the goal was if people actually picked up. Lots of it was based on luck. The full time employees were also calling which took away people who might have picked up for us.

Advice

Very unique and interesting experience. Super cool company and backstory.
