I really enjoy working closely with my mentor and manager. They provided me a meaningful independent project and offered me guidance as I progress. I also enjoyed talking with people in different departments of the company to learn the big picture of different projects.

I wish I could spend more time working in the office in person.

What I liked

I was able to work with two different team in the company's Human Resource department. I worked with both employee services as well as diversity and inclusion.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have met more full time employees from different departments.

Advice

People are always willing to share their role in a company and often times by showing your interest and showing your engagement to learn more can result in a shadowing opportunity. It is important to remember in an internship you are there to learn so utilize this and engage, learn and interact as much as possible diligently.

What I liked

Work atmosphere was extremely professional and well kept. Moral was high and coworkers were outgoing and cheerful. Projects were extremely interesting and useful.

What I wish was different

Perhaps some more opportunities to meet other interns would've been nice, however that is the only thing I'd change.

This company is incredible to work for if you enjoy a fast-paced, hardworking environment that values results.

Vertex has a great environment and my role was my first time in industry, but it was very well integrated because my manager also came from academia and treated me like an independent grad student but also guided me very closely.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a chance to get to know my manager more.

Advice

Make friends and prepare presentations for each meeting!

What I liked

Everyone valued my opinions. They always wanted to make sure that they were not over/under working me. I loved the atmosphere and what I did.

What I wish was different

I wish I had accepted to work less hours, so I could have more of a summer.

Advice

Self-advocating is a must. If you feel like they are not giving you enough work or too much work, let your supervisor know. Also, if you feel like you are ready to get more rigorous work let them know. If you feel like you do not understand something, ask questions.
