C&I Engineering

Electrical Engineering Co-op

May - August 2023 • Louisville, KY

What I liked

I thought that C&I did an excellent job of pairing me with an experienced mentor, giving me meaningful work throughout the entirety of my co-op, and preparing me for a career as an electrical engineer. Within a matter of days of starting I was working independently on projects for one of C&I's largest clients, and with guidance from a mentor, I was able to complete multiple construction packages by the end of my term. I also highly valued how C&I made it a priority for me to visit the client sites on multiple occasions during my first co-op. This was extremely helpful because I was able to see first-hand the equipment that I was designing changes to and get a better understanding of how to adapt my work to meet the client's expectations.

What I wish was different

Overall, I had a very positive first co-op experience. If there is anything that I could change I would have enjoyed the opportunity to work with more employees throughout the company by participating in multiple projects. However, with this being my first co-op, it was very beneficial to spend a majority of my time on a single project that was just entering the detail-design phase when I arrived at C&I. This allowed me get a much more robust understanding of what goes into a large engineering project. This experience gave me the skills to hit the ground running with multiple projects during my second co-op experience.

Advice

One piece of advice that I would share about this experience is to connect with as many employees throughout the company. The people at C&I are very personable and building friendships with the people I worked with was very rewarding. This made work not only more enjoyable on a daily basis but also created relationships that put me in a good position to receive extra work from my co-workers whose schedules were full. I was able to get additional engineering experience with multiple clients that was very valuable.
