Student Research Assistant

June - August 2019 • Colorado Springs, CO

What I liked

I had the opportunity to collaborate with faculty at Colorado College and get to know my major department better. I had the opportunity to join at the point right before a paper was published, and the data we collected allowed the students in lab, myself included, to be published in a respected journal. I liked the mentoring style of my professor and the independence she allowed us.

What I wish was different

Nothing.

Advice

The majority of research is failing to get results and troubleshooting why what you expected does not occur, how your methods can be optimized, how you can push the limits of your research system to get results. As such, my advice would be not to expect immediate results and to be patient, without getting down on your self because its not working.

IT Worker

May - August 2018 • Colorado Springs, CO

What I liked

The hours were flexible and my supervisors had many interesting tasks for us to work on. I worked in the Tech Sandbox area for emerging technologies, so I got to play around with a lot of futuristic and fun applications.

What I wish was different

They were in the middle of a staff change when I started, meaning that my original boss got replaced by another worker right before I started work. This shift caused a bit of a mix-up with who was in charge of my area, what the expectations for my department were, and whether or not my job was secure. I wish they had handled that before the summer started.

Advice

Shadow all other areas of ITS! The Solutions Center especially is filled with many knowledgeable, dedicated people who are passionate about what they do and the students they help. It's always good to get cross-departmental experience, and ITS makes it so easy to explore the other areas since they are all on one floor of the library.
