Construction Project Management Intern

June - August 2023 • New York City, NY

What I liked

This company has a great culture and strong focus on development of younger employees and interns. The most experienced project managers and supervisors made sure to mentor myself and others through our internships.

What I wish was different

Advice

Always ask questions and actively seek knowledge. Internships are only valuable if you show initiative and want to learn.

Project Intern

June - August 2023 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Before my internship had started, I had no idea what it would be like doing construction in the field of healthcare, which is something I know very little about. I spent my summer working under project managers and superintendents at NYU Langone Hospital in Kips Bay, Manhattan. I really liked how everyone treated me in the office, I felt very valued. Also, I enjoyed talking to the subcontractors, such as the electricians and carpenters. This is what really helped me to learn a lot about construction projects.

What I wish was different

Working in the hospital all summer, I learned so much about doing construction in hospitals and what it is like. One of the biggest things I learned is that doing construction in an active hospital is very tough because we have to cater to the patients and workers. However, one thing that I wish had been different is the exposure to different job sites, such as residential, high rise, etc. Since Lendlease works on projects like this, it would be nice to work on those sites as well.

Advice

One of my largest pieces of advice about this experience is to go into it with an open mind and be open to all opportunities. Throughout my summer working here, I had so many different requests and opportunities thrown at me and had to say yes, because this is what helps you to learn. You get exposure to so many new things and learn new things everyday. Basically, don't be scared and go in with an open mind!

What I liked

I enjoyed the opportunities to improve my technical skills and experience a project in a field office setting. The staff was very welcoming and willing to help.

What I wish was different

I would not change anything. I got to be exposed to several different parts of the project during my time with LendLease which kept my experience exciting.

Construction Management Intern

June - September 2017 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

Great experience! Went in with no expectations, learned a lot about the building industry, the building process (from design to construction), had lots of opportunities to network with many professionals in the city, and had a great mentor who was there to answer any questions that I had!

What I wish was different

Nothing

Advice

Go in with an open mind, if you get asked to make copies then make the most of it and try to use that as an opportunity to build relationships with people in the office, don't be afraid to ask simple questions, and be grateful for the opportunity to get paid to learn!

Intern to Superintendent

What I liked

The culture and community of the team I was a part of was phenomenal.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish I had been different was the location of the internship.

Advice

I definitely recommend an experience like this as it gets you a real feel for the field of work you are pursuing which is unobtainable in a classroom.

Project Engineer

May - August 2018 • Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

What I liked

The team was very accommodating in 'grooming' me to be industry-ready.

What I wish was different

It was a perfect place to start a career and develop necessary skills for the industry

Advice

Never be afraid or shy to ask questions and seek explanations from your supervisor. Be proactive in seeking 'works' to be done, be it helping a colleague or helping out your supervisor. Also never be afraid to ask your supervisor if you can join any meetings- regardless what meeting that might be.
