North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality

Water Quality Outreach

May - July 2020 • Raleigh, NC

What I liked

I gained a lot of various experiences from this internship which made it extremely rewarding. I gained interview experience by interviewing conservationists across North Carolina to get their perspectives on water quality management projects. I received grant review experience because I studied dozens of water management grant applications and projects. I learned how to be a part of a team despite only ever working with them remotely (due to COVID-19). Lastly, I put my document design and writing skills to work for NC State government to improve the quality of our natural environment.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more opportunities to work and interact with other people in the Division of Water Resources (DWR). Working remotely severely hindered my ability to meet people and build casual relationships, which is one of the most important parts of any work I do. I like to make teams and collaborate whenever possible. Many of us were still just navigating the uncertainties of the pandemic, so it's understandable that the experience was not the same as normal. At the end of the day, I am just extremely grateful DWR shifted to a remote internship that allowed me to work. Many of my friends and peers had their internships canceled because of the pandemic, so I know I was lucky.

Advice

Network as much as you can! There are a lot of really interesting people in DWR and NCDEQ with great experiences. Working with other environmentalists and understanding their roads to success is so helpful for college students looking to preserve our planet and futures. Ask questions and show interest; people are always happy to help those who take initiative!
