I enjoyed spending all of my time focusing on my research instead of having to split it between classes like usual. It was a great experience taking the project and making it my own, becoming experienced and knowledgeable in that area of research and doing the best I could with it.
What I wish was different
Looking back I wish there had been more interactions with my professor, but that is my fault for not reaching out more than our weekly meeting.
Advice
Always ask for help if you don't know what's going on. It's also good to read through any documents and research articles in the beginning, the middle, and the end of the program to make sure that you still know all the details and are familiar with the bigger picture of what you are doing.

May - August 2019 • Rochester, NY
What I liked
I liked that I was in a small software development team, working with a group of web developers and designers and taking the leadership role. I was able to apply the knowledge that I learned in class to real-life at work. My communication skills have improved after this co-op and I learned quite a lot about project management.
What I wish was different
Throughout the internship, I along with my coworkers had developed many creative and new ideas. However, they couldn't be implemented due to some roadblocks that are out of our control. I wish that new interns' ideas would be valued more.
Advice
This was my first co-op. Don't be afraid to apply for different types of jobs. Be open to learning along the new journey, and you'll do great! The important part of being a business analyst and project manager is to communicate. If you have questions, don't be afraid of approaching other people and ask!

What I liked
I like the independence to forge my own path, I was used to following orders so setting my own schedule and hours was very different. Yet now I have a new kind of confidence in myself for staying motivated and on track.
What I wish was different
I wish I had been around people more often, I found that I don't like working by myself the majority of the time. I need feedback on the work and I want to learn about what others are doing too!
Advice
Set a plan early for yourself, have goals and milestones for your co-op. Then hit every one of them by the end. It keeps you fresh and on your toes for the duration of the co-op. Also write down all your accomplishments as they happen, nothing is too small!

What I liked
Diverse activities, I learned more about teaching kids, it was different every day, I learned more about working in a lab.
What I wish was different
I wish I had been paid better because I was basically doing the job of two people. I had to be the assistant for two camps at once and that becomes very difficult.
Advice
If you are good at handling being stretched in many directions at once and can learn how to effectively deal with children this would be a good job.

Digital Marketing Intern
May 2019 • Rochester, NY
What I liked
I liked that I was given some room for creativity. My coworkers were very open to hearing my ideas. I felt like I was able to bring new ideas to the team without fear of them dismissing me simply because i was an intern. The environment was very nice.
What I wish was different
I wish I had more interns to work with some days. I was the only intern during the summer and having more friends would have made it more enjoyable.
Advice
I would advise anyone who is an intern to actually push themselves to try and contribute in meaningful ways asides from grunt work. You get out what you put in. If you go into an internship and only do the bare minimum then it won't be as much as of an experience than if you try to go beyond what you're required to do.

Research Assistant
June - August 2019 • Rochester, NY
What I liked
Being able to work full time in a research lab is an amazing experience. Coming in everyday and solving new problems and watching a project progress is extremely fulfilling.
What I wish was different
My only wish is that the experience was longer! 10 weeks goes by faster than you'd think.
Advice
Be sure to really make the most of this time, you can pick up so many valuable skills in the lab that you can't learn from your classes. It really helps your own understanding to tie the theory to the experimental, so pay attention and don't miss the chance to do so!

REU
May - August 2018 • Rochester, NY
What I liked
I learned a lot about academia and what graduate school had to offer. There were lots of opportunities to interact with graduate students and get a sense of graduate school was like. Additionally, I made a great network of friends and professors in the community.
What I wish was different
Although the school is great and the campus was very nice, there did not seem to be a lot to do in the surrounding area. I wish I had more actively looked for more events to attend in my free time.
Advice
Keep an open mind when people tell you things! It's always beneficial to hear the thoughts and opinions of BOTH professors and students.
